Introducing High Performance Computing (HPC) to the Next Generation of Innovators

NSCC Singapore recently hosted an HPC Introductory Workshop for 24 computing students from National University of Singapore (NUS) High School, aimed at introducing them to the fundamentals of HPC, potential career pathways, and hands-on experience running real-world benchmarks.

While students were already familiar with Linux and AI models, this was their first encounter with large-scale computing systems like NSCC Singapore’s ASPIRE2A supercomputer. The session covered the capabilities and applications of HPC, highlighted career opportunities, and culminated in a practical exercise running the HPL benchmark.

The hands-on segment was well-received, with most students successfully completing the task. Several expressed strong interest in pursuing HPC further, while International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) competitors engaged in deeper technical discussions around AI workloads on ASPIRE2A.

A special highlight was having Qin Haichen—an NSCC Singapore intern and NUS High alumnus—return to lead the practical session, offering students a glimpse of where passion and perseverance can lead.
