10 Years with NSCC: Charting the Future of Innovation

Nearly four decades into Singapore’s supercomputing journey, the past decade has marked a defining chapter. From ASPIRE 1 through ASPIRE 2A/2A+ to ASPIRE 2B, the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) has evolved from operating national supercomputing infrastructure to delivering an integrated compute platform that powers AI, simulation, hybrid quantum classical computing and scientific discovery. 

 

Working alongside research and industry partners, NSCC is helping Singapore advance breakthroughs in healthcare, materials discovery, climate resilience, AI, maritime engineering and national security, translating advanced computing into real world impact.  

 

As we mark this 10-year milestone, our focus turns firmly to the future. Guided by our three strategic pillars—enhancing HPC capacity and diversity, empowering talent and users, and delivering operational excellence—we are well  positioned to enable Singapore’s next wave of scientific discovery and innovation. Ten years on, our journey is only just beginning. 

 

Journey through our key milestones below:

2016 – Singapore’s 1PFlops supercomputer, ASPIRE 1, comes online as the region’s most powerful supercomputer. ASPIRE 1 was ranked No. 115 in the world in the TOP500 supercomputer list in November 2016.

2018 – The inaugural SupercomputingAsia 2018 (SCA2018) conference is held for the first time. The event is an umbrella of notable supercomputing and allied events in Asia with the objective of promoting a vibrant and shared Asian, and global, HPC ecosystem.

2020 – NSCC’s Köppen system, with a performance of over 160 TFLOPS, storage capacity of over 1.2 PB and 52 compute nodes, is commissioned. The system supports the research needs of the climate research community. In particular, the HPC resources were crucial in the development of Singapore’s 3rd National Climate Change Study (V3).

2022 – Singapore’s next generation HPE Cray EX supercomputer, ASPIRE 2A, with up to 10 PFLOPS of raw computing capacity and is seven times more powerful than ASPIRE 1 is set up and developed. ASPIRE 2A is ranked 167th (GPU portion) and 275th (CPU portion) in the November 2022 TOP500 list of the World’s Fastest Supercomputers.

2023 – ASPIRE 1, Singapore’s first petascale supercomputer ceased its operations and was officially decommissioned on 31 August 2023.

2024 – ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+ were officially launched on 25 October 2024. While ASPIRE 2A began operations in July 2023, ASPI RE 2A+ was introduced to meet the growing demand for AI, delivering 20 PFLOPS of computing power and ranking No. 90 on the November 2024 TOP500 list. At the launch, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat also announced a S$270 million multi-year investment to strengthen Singapore’s national supercomputing and AI capabilities.

2026 – ASPIRE 2B, Singapore’s newest national supercomputer, was launched. Ranked No. 44 on the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, it delivers four times the compute capacity of ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+ combined, significantly advancing Singapore’s national AI and high-performance computing capabilities. Designed to support the emerging hybrid quantum-classical computing paradigm, ASPIRE 2B enables researchers to develop hybrid algorithms for solving increasingly complex scientific and AI challenges. Looking ahead, NSCC 3.0 is already underway to shape the future of Singapore’s national compute ecosystem.
