NSCC welcomed students from the NUS School of Computing’s Parallel Computing course for a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+’s national supercomputers, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application.
The visit included an introduction to the history of high performance computing in Singapore, followed by an overview of NSCC and how we support research, translating them into tangible benefits to society. Students also heard from Tim Zhang Danxu, an NSCC Systems Engineer, who began his journey with us as an intern back when he was a student himself.
A technical deep dive into the architecture of ASPIRE 2A and ASPIRE 2A+ systems highlighted key features, including cooling systems optimised for Singapore’s tropical climate. This gave students a foundational understanding of our supercomputers, before they wrapped up the day with a guided tour of the data centre and a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the immense compute power driving Singapore’s research ecosystem.
