From First Login to First Job Submission: Inside February’s ASPIRE 2A Workshop

Every HPC journey starts somewhere.

This month, a new group of researchers took their first step into the ASPIRE 2A supercomputing environment—experiencing the process from system onboarding to the submission of their first compute jobs.

The session walked participants through:

  • System Architecture and Onboarding: Understanding the overall setup of ASPIRE 2A, user enrolment, and logging into NSCC Singapore login nodes
  • Developer Tools and Compilers: Navigating compilers, libraries, and developer tools to prepare code for execution
  • Environment Modules and Job Scripting: Mastering environment modules and creating PBS Pro job submission scripts, including specialized scripts for MPI
  • Preparing Code for Execution: Practical hands-on training for file transfers and compiling simple C programs.

Participants concluded the workshop by successfully compiling code, writing scripts, and executing jobs on the national supercomputing platform. These technical capabilities enable researchers to scale their workloads and utilize compute allocations for high-impact scientific output.
