Introduction

Since its inception in 2015, the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore has been providing supercomputing resources to its stakeholders and the industry for R&D purposes. A gap exists as some of this R&D work cannot be efficiently executed on the on-premise resources but they can do so in the cloud environment. Some of these needs include (i) the business continuity plan for ASPIRE1, (ii) high end high performance computing (HPC) workloads during peak demand, (iii) commodity HPC workloads, (iv) low end computing for students and (v) specialty hardware such as quantum computing. Therefore NSCC aims to deploy a National HPC Research Cloud platform to address the different computing needs that are currently unmet by NSCC’s current supercomputing resources. The proposed National HPC Research Cloud will provide flexible and readily scalable cloud computing resources that will complement those hosted by NSCC. The cloud-based resources will be made affordable by leveraging the aggregated demand across NSCC’s stakeholders and partner organisations.
